The 1938 Jefferson nickel was once in the beginning designed by Felix Sclag. The beloved Jefferson nickel coin had Sclag’s designed until 2004, when the “Westward Journey” Nickels came to life. Every year, from 2004-2006, new obverse and reverse designs for the Jefferson nickels were minted. All the way through World War II, 1942-1945, the composition of the Jefferson nickel changed. No nickel was once used to make the Jefferson coins All the way through this era. The ones nickels were fabricated from 56% copper, 35% silver and 9% manganese, Every weighing 1.59 grams. Jefferson nickels now and before the wartime period are fabricated from 75% copper and 25% nickel, Every weighing 5 grams. All Jefferson nickels are 21.2 mm in diameter.
